From infection research to diagnostics applications

The Kurt Schwabe Institute (KSI) welcomed Dr. Dirk Kuhlmeier from the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (Fraunhofer IZI) in Leipzig for a scientific talk entitled “Infection Research & Diagnostics at Fraunhofer IZI.”

The presentation offered insights into the institute’s research activities and the development of technologies for detecting infectious diseases. It highlighted how scientific research can be translated into practical applications, bringing together scientific knowledge, technological innovation and real-world diagnostic needs.

Alongside his work at Fraunhofer IZI, Dr. Kuhlmeier is a co-founder of INTU Diagnostics, a company focused on in vitro diagnostics (IVD) for the detection of infectious diseases. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of DIANA e.V., bringing together stakeholders from research and industry to advance innovation in diagnostics and support collaboration across the field.

New perspectives on non-invasive diagnostics

An important topic of discussion was non-invasive diagnostics, an area offering promising opportunities for further research and technological development. The topic highlighted potential synergies with KSI’s expertise in sensor technology and analytical methods, particularly in developing new approaches to non-invasive measurement and analysis.

The visit provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge, discuss current challenges in infection research and diagnostics, and explore shared scientific interests. We thank Dr. Kuhlmeier for his visit and the engaging discussion!
